Located on Pelican and Galveston Islands, Galveston is a coastal city consisting of 208.3 square miles. It has a population of 47,762 (estimated in 2012) and it's the county seat: it's also the second-largest municipality of Galveston County. Galveston was named after Bernardo de Galvezy Madrid, the Count of Galvez. The first European settlements on Galveston were constructed by a French pirate named Louis-Michel Aury around 1816, to assist the Republic of Mexico fight Spain.

Following its independence from Spain in 1825 the Port of Galveston was established by the Congress of Mexico. During the Texas Revolution the city served as the principal port for the Texas Navy, later serving as the capital of the Republic of Texas. Galveston became a big US commercial center during the 19th century and was one of the biggest ports in the United States. Then in 1900 it was devastated with serious flooding and storm surges by the Galveston Hurricane. This terrible natural disaster had an estimated death toll of between 6,000 and 8,000 people, and is still ranked as the most-deadly in US history.

Economy of Galveston

Most of Galveston's economy is related to health care, tourism, financial industries, and shipping. The 84-acre University of Texas Medical Branch campus is a huge economic boost for the city with its enrolments of more than 2,500 students. Six historic districts call Galveston home, with the largest and most historically significant 19th century collection of buildings: there are more than 60 structures noted in the National Register of Historic Places.

The City of Galveston is located on Galveston Island: this is a barrier island near the mainland coast off the Texas Gulf. Anyone venturing offshore on a ship or boat would require a cell phone signal booster in order to maintain mobile connection to the towers lining the coast. These mobile towers are rented, owned, or maintained by the main carriers in that area, and these include T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T.

The island is affected by weather and water, is unstable, and its boundaries can shift through erosion: this is because it consists of sand-sized particles, smaller amounts of mud sediments, and bigger gravel-sized sediments.

Galveston sits approximately 45 miles southeast of Houston: the Gulf of Mexico is to the south and east, on the west is West Bay, and to the north is Galveston Bay. Interstate Highway 45 is the island's main access point coming from the mainland, crossing West Bay on the north-east of the island. The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and the Gulf are connected to Galveston's harbor by a deep-water channel.

Galveston has a total area of 208.4 square miles, of which 46.2 square miles is land and 162.2 square miles is water. The island sits 50 miles south-east of Houston. The ‘West End' is the western portion of Galveston. Eastern Galveston communities include Offats Bayou, Lake Madeline, Fort Crockett, Central City, Lasker Park, Bayou Shore, Kempner Park, Carver Park, San Jacinto, Central Business District (Old City), Lindale, and East End.

Transportation by Golf Cart!

In 2009 a lot of residents from the West End were using golf carts as a means of transportation to take them around the residential area, to the stores, and the Galveston Island Country Club. Charles Wiley, Chief of Police said in 2009 that golf carts ought to be prohibited when outside the golf course, which of course the West End residents campaigned against.

No Rebuilding of West End

Rice University released a study in 2011 called ‘Atlas of Sustainable Strategies for Galveston Island'. It stated that Galveston's West End was eroding quite quickly and that construction and the population should be reduced in that area. Its recommendation was that there would be no rebuilding of the West End should there be damage caused by another hurricane. Scientists are recognizing increasingly that barrier islands are not stable and can't be permanently fixed.

Galveston's Climаtе

The climate in Galveston is what's known as ‘humid subtropical'. Winds from the southeast and the south bring heat from the Mexican deserts and rain from the Gulf of Mexico. In this area winters are temperate: snowfall is rare, and rainfall averages more than 40 inches a year – sometimes as high as 50 inches.

The Economy

In 1825 the Port of Galveston began as a trading post. Today, there are 850 acres of port facilities. The port is located on the north side of Galveston Island on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway: some facilities are located on Pelican Island. There are facilities handling all cargo types, including liquid and dry bulk, containers, roll-on/roll-off, breakbulk, project cargoes, and refrigerated cargo. While on the high seas marine vessels use cell phone signal boosters to ensure reliable contact with their contractors and employees.

This port is also the passenger cruise ship terminal for ships operating in the Caribbean. The Carnival Ecstasy and the Carnival Conquest both call this terminal their home port. Then in November 2011 Galveston became home port to the mega-ships Carnival Triumph and Carnival Magic. Carnival Magic is the largest cruise ship based at this port, and it does a 7-day Caribbean cruise from Galveston. In winter, Galveston is the home port to the MS Mariner of the Seas, the largest cruise ship based at the port: this ship is capable of carrying 4, 252 passengers! Disney's Cruise Line's ship named Disney Magic became based in Galveston in September 2012: this ship offers from 4 to 8-day cruises to the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

Galveston's Finаnсе

One of America's largest life insurance companies, American National Insurance Company, is based in Galveston. This company with its subsidiaries operates in all 50 of the US states, plus Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia and American Samoa. American National de Mexico has its headquarters in Galveston and is one of the biggest privately owned banks in Texas. Established in 1927, its trust department administers more than 12 billion dollars in assets, making it one of the states largest. And, the regional headquarters of United Fire & Casualty Company are also based in this city.

Health Care

Some of the biggest teaching hospitals in the state are based on the campus of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Before the arrival of Hurricane Ike, more than 12,000 people were employed at the University. Its huge growth in the 70s and 80s was attributed to the highly qualified medical and management faculty members.
