Freedom Mobile provides HSPA on the AWS Band 5 of the 1700 MHz and 2100 MHz frequencies, which mean that you will need to find an AWS compatible booster. Some areas of Freedom’s network also use HSPA+.
Freedom Mobile offers very low prices as a result of building a unique network that allows users in Canada to spend their time on their network. The mobile carrier continues to enhance its existing 3G network that will be fully accomplished by the end of 2016. Its traffic-free new LTE network is accessible in Vancouver and Toronto with expansion expected to hit other areas by 2018.
Freedom Mobile is a Canadian carrier for wireless telecommunications with an active subscriber base of over one million. It is owned by Shaw Communications. The carrier's subscriber base is spread across Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario. Currently, it is the fourth largest Canadian mobile carrier.
At its founding in 2008, Freedom Mobile was known as “Wind Mobile” and founded by Globalive, a communications company. In 2008 the Canadian government’s huge initiative to enhance competition within the wireless sector saw Wind Mobile being founded together with others such as Public Mobile that Telus later acquired, and Mobilicity. Its first initial launch of voice and data mobile services took place in Ontario's Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area by December 2009 as well as in Alberta's Calgary area.
Around December 16th, 2015, it was announced by Shaw Communications that it was about to acquire mid-Bowline Group, the parent company of Wind Mobile. The deal was put at about $1.6 billion and needed to be approved by Industry Canada (today known as the Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada) as well as the Competition Bureau. By November 21st of 2016, Wind Mobile was renamed by Shaw Communications to “Freedom Mobile”, a heralding a new beginning. This is because Shaw was unwilling to continue licensing from VimpelCom the Wind brand due to royalty fees that were continually going up.
Around the same time in November 21, 2016 the new Freedom Mobile indicated that it will be launching LTE services across Vancouver and Toronto on the AWS-3 band. Its LTE national rollout would then follow before the end of 2017. The result for upgrade was that its services were under-utilized and not heavily supported by most LTE devices today.
Freedom Mobile will continue implementing its LTE advanced service in Peterborough, Kingston and Ottawa on its AWS-1 band to offer LTE network access to its subscribers who have devices compatible to the AWS-1.
Freedom Mobile also provides HSPA data under the UMTS wireless service via its Band IV on the UMTS license. Through the band the transmission of the user equipment remains between 1710MHz and 1755MHz that receives 2110MHz to 2155MHz transmission. In Canada, Freedom Mobile became the first carrier to utilize the Advanced Wireless Service type of spectrum across its network. The LTE network Freedom is rolling out but will however utilize its recently acquired AWS-3 during the spectrum auction, with the rollout expected to be completed by August 2017.
To enjoy the various 3G and 4G LTE advanced signals provided by Freedom Mobile in areas with a poor signal in Canada, weBoost provides various cell phone signal boosters for use in vehicles or boats or homes, whether small or large buildings/homes.
