How would you use the RF Signal Detector or RF Spectrum Analyzer? The following instructions will help you learn to use this device very effectively. The purpose of the RF Signal Detector is to assist professional signal booster installers in installing a Wilson Electronics Signal Booster. There are three main uses for this signal detector: Mapping the frequency environment of the install location, Maximizing coverage area and Pointing directional antennae.
Mapping the frequency environment consists of taking the signal detector and testing the signal throughout the location where you will be installing the signal booster system. Noting the locations of good and bad reception areas will help you find the best locations to place the inside and outside antennas as well as how to best cover the home or building with increased signal. You can use the included 301144 omni directional antenna for indoor frequency mapping or for outdoor mapping, we also recommend using the optional 308410 directional antenna accessory kit. The signal detector can also be used to point the outside antenna in the direction of the strongest signal. By connecting the signal detector to the outside antenna and turning the antenna, you can easily read the incoming signal and direct the antenna accordingly.
To use the Wilson signal detector, you will need a few key pieces of information. One: Which cellular carriers will be used at the install location? Two: The broadcast frequencies for carriers in the area. Three: The frequency range for those specific carriers.
Before starting work at an install location, talk to the customer and ask which cellular carriers they will be using. Once you know which carriers will need boosted signal, you can begin finding the signal frequencies. Start by going to a website which will show you the carriers available in your install area. We recommend wirelessadvisor.com. Enter your zip code and you will be able to see all of the cellular carriers in that area as well as the various frequency bands each carrier is using. Note each frequency band for the carriers the customer will be using at the install location. Refer to this table in your signal detector user manual, to find the frequency range for the frequency band.
Next, go to the FCC website to find the broadcast frequencies for each carrier. Once at FCC website where broadcast frequencies are shown for each carrier, locate the specialized search heading on the page and click on the geographic link below. Enter your location. We recommend using the state and county as other methods can take quite some time to load. With your location entered, locate the frequency section at the bottom of the page and enter the frequency range for the carrier you need. This is where earlier steps come into play. Take the frequency you found on wirelessadvisor.com and compare that to the table of frequency ranges found in your user manual. This will give you the frequency range for that particular band. Take this frequency range and input it into the frequency section of the FCC website. Select the range option, enter the frequency range, then click the search button. A list of licenses in your area will be displayed.
Most of the providers will be listed by the carrier name. However, occasionally a license will be listed as a non-descript name. In this case, click on the license in question and look for the contact info. This will tell you which carrier is using this license. Note the "status" field and ensure the license that you are looking at, is active. If a license is not active, it is no longer in use by the carrier and will not be of any use to you. Click on the license of interest and then click on view frequencies. This will display the precise frequency range used by this carrier in your area. If a view frequency link is not available, look at the associated frequencies and channel block to find these frequencies. Repeat this process for each carrier that you will be using at the install location and record the various frequency ranges. With all of the frequencies you will need recorded, you can now tune the signal detector into these specific frequencies and do your various signal readings at the install location.
Understanding the signal detector: Looking at the signal detector screen, you will see three sets of numbers. The top set of numbers is the down link center frequency. This number designates the center frequency you are currently detecting. The bottom left set of numbers is the pass band width. In layman's terms, this simply denotes how wide of a frequency section you are detecting. For example, here we have a center frequency of 896.50 with a pass band width of 10. What this means is you are currently tuned into the 896.50 frequency as a center point and sampling a 10 mhz section. This puts the 10 mhz range and puts 5mhz on either side of that center point. For example, we may detect signals from 891.50 to 901.0 mhz range. The bottom right set of numbers displays your current signal.
All signals are displayed as a negative number and the higher the number the better, meaning -60 is better than -100. The three buttons below the screen allow you to change the settings on the signal detector allowing you to tune in to whichever frequency you need. The Band Select button will select between the various down link bands. The BW Select button changes the past band width and toggles between 1.5 mhz and 10 mhz allowing you to choose between a wide and narrow frequency range. The CH Select button will step to the next channel. Steps earning 1.5 mhz increments for the 1.5 mhz band width and typically 5 mhz increments for the 10 mhz band width. To avoid having to repeat this process every time, keep your notes for future reference.
Now that we have explained how the signal detector functions, let us try an example. Let us say we are trying to boost the signal at a home and the customer uses T-Mobile as their cellular provider. On wirelessadvisor.com we enter the zip code of the install location and see that T-Mobile operates on the 1900 mhz band in this area. Once on the FCC website, we enter the state and county. Then after cross checking the 1900 mhz band with the table in the user manual, we enter the frequency range of 1930-1990 mhz. The FCC website shows all of the licenses for this frequency in the area and we see one is licensed to T-Mobile. Clicking on this information, we see that T-Mobile operates on the 1850-1865 and 1930-1945 frequencies. The signal detector will only measure the downlink signal and we will only need to look at the 1930-1945 mhz band. Please note that the higher frequency is typically the down-link frequency.
Here's how to tune the signal detector to the 1930-1945 frequency band. First press the Band Select button until the 1900 mhz band is selected. Next press the CH Select button until we are centered in the proper range. In this case, we would want to be centered around 1940 mhz. Finally press the BW Select button and select 10 mhz to cover from 1935-1945. This should give you an accurate reading of the T-Mobile signal strength. However, if you want to make sure that you are not getting any out of band signal readings, you can press the BW Select button and select the 1.5 mhz setting and then use the CH Select button to center the frequency on 1938.25 mhz. This will ensure that the signal readings you are receiving are well within the 1930-1945 mhz range used by T-Mobile in this scenario.
The received signal strength will be displayed on a signal meter next to the band width and will be continuously updating. Please note that signal strength is measured in decibels and is always displayed as a negative number. The closer that number gets to zero, the stronger the signal. For example, a signal reading of -70 db is stronger than a signal of -80 db. By repeating this process, you will effectively be able to map and identify signal strength in all areas of the install location.
