About Tbaytel.

For over 110 years, Tbaytel has helped connect Fort William and Port Arthur communities prior to their official 1970 amalgamation. It has borne the changing tide of the telecommunications industry since 1902 when it was established. The company celebrated 110 years of existence in 2012.   Thunder Bay Telephone has evolved into the largest Canadian independently owned provider of telecommunication services offering diverse services and products from Security, Digital TV, Internet, Wireless, and Voice to Data services.

Municipally owned, the telecom company is a property of the City of Thunder Bay and Northern Ontario people by extension. In the late 1990s, Tbaytel started giving a fixed annual dividend to the City of Thunder Bay, which stood at $3 million before rising to $17 million On April 27th, 2016. In May 2016, the Telecommunications solutions provider announced a partnership offering free WiFi at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Center.

Fiber Internet.

Tbaytel offers Fiber Internet, a faster and reliable broadband technology known as the Tbaytel Fiber. However, considering it is always an expanding service it is not always strong or fully available in certain areas. In fact both Tbaytel's Digital TV and Fiber services are offered on a limited availability and only available where technology and access permit. The company offers 25 Mbps download and 13 Mbps upload speed minimum plan on their Business Fiber 25 plan and maximum of 100 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload on the Business Fibre 100 plan.

Digital TV service provided by Tbaytel is accessible through their HD compatible set top boxes, essentially connected with a PVR service for free. It means a user can record and watch from a single PVR on any connected television.

Mobility voice and data plans.

Tbaytel offers mobility voice and data plans from basic plans for both convenience and safety to cover all networking, data and voice calls through full-service plans. The company provides regional and local services, including a unique 4G/LTE HSPA Network.  In 2000, Tbaytel introduced high speed internet. 10 years later, the Tbaytel and Rogers business relationship was launched for mobility customers to benefit from both global and domestic roaming.

It is worth noting that there has been some confusion on Tbaytel 3G and 4G services. Before December 2010, both HSPA and HSPA+ in Canada were referred to as 3G. 4G network before 2010 for mobility was only used to describe LTE and other protocols above that. Nonetheless, large Canadian and US carriers pressured the ITU to reclassify 3G+ or HSPA+ as 4G. Their argument was that 3G+ fast speeds qualified to be reclassified as 4G. Before introduction of its 4G LTE services in 2015, Tbaytel was running 3G+/HSPA+ equipment later reclassified by the ITU in December 2010 as 4G. Tbaytel has both LTE and 4G (3G+/HSPA+). Tbaytel customers around Kenora and Thunder Bay can easily connect to 2G GSM network along the periphery of the LTE/HSPA coverage.

Tbaytel did shut down its CDMA network in 2014. It doesn’t provide VoLTE service although the company maintains roaming agreements in Canada with MTS and Rogers. The 4G network has a 300,000 square kilometer reach, which is Northern Ontario's largest network.

Boosters for Tbaytel.

Tbaytel is a very unique telecommunications company and its wireless carrier system can be a little complex. However, all of our three types of signal boosters (for home, car, and M2M applications) are fully compatible with all Tbaytel cellular devices. Please use the product selector link in top right corner if you wish, or contact us if you still need assistance in selecting the right signal booster.

Any of the high speed booster kits will work perfectly with your type of phone. Those with LTE/4G phones can go with the five band Tbaytel cell phone signal booster for better signal and coverage. Those’er backward compatible too, so they will boost reception for 2G and 3G devices too!

Note that all the various amplifiers and repeaters provided for the three categories above will perfectly boost phones reception within the Tbaytel cellular network. 3G signal boosters amplify 3G data, text and voice connections. 4G listed cell phone boosters on the other hand amplify 3G, text and voice, plus 4G/LTE wireless data connections to Tbaytel signal towers.
