Product description of weBoost Drive 4G-X Fleet Vehicle Cell Signal Booster | 470221.

weBoost Drive 4G-X Fleet Vehicle Cell Signal Booster by Wilson Electronics (SKU: 470221) is designed for commercial fleet vehicles such as police cars, delivery trucks, and other similar government or commercial vehicles. Drive 4GX Fleet is a Professional Vehicle Cell Signal Booster that increases calling range, provides fastest available data speeds, and improves call quality in weak-signal areas. It is specifically designed for fleet vehicles like law enforcement, utilities, government, maintenance as well as commercial fleets including local delivery and service trucks. It includes a high performance NMO antenna that affixes permanently to the vehicle and requires professional installation. This powerful system boosts signal strength for cellular-based fleet tracking, allowing dispatchers and managers to better track vehicles in weak-signal areas.

Wilson Electronics recently introduced this new weBoost 4GX Fleet product on July 9th, 2018 into their already well-known brand line of cellphone signal boosters. While the boosters offered by the company have always been superb, this is the first booster from Wilson Electronics which is specifically designed for Fleet Vehicles. The company specializes in cellphone signal boosting solutions with over 20 years of experience. The new addition of the fleet-based booster adds a new line to its already expansive selection of mobile boosters. Ideal uses for the Drive 4G X-Fleet include police cars, carrier trucks (such as FedEx, UPS, Express, USPS, etc.), delivery trucks, search and rescue vehicles, as well as government fleet cars and trucks.

About the development of the Drive 4G-X Fleet.

The chief product officer, Jeff Gudewicz, stated that the Drive 4G-X Fleet was created as a solution to improve connectivity. Founder Jim Wilson, who manufactured CBs and two-way antennas for truckers and fleet drivers and built the weBoost brand started with fleets in mind. So, what is new about the Drive 4G-X Fleet?

The Drive 4G-X Fleet is unlike other mobile cellular professional grade boosters in the level of power and performance that delivers. Unlike the other similar products in the weBoost line for fleet vehicles, this kit requires a mounting through the headliner and professional installation. The other versions use a magnetized outdoor antenna. Why use this means of installation?

By developing the Drive 4G-X Fleet to have a headliner mount, the device provides a clutter free space as well as maximizes the efficiency of the booster (as the cable does not run through the door, increasing the risk of pinching even though the cables can withstand standard opening and closing).

How the Drive 4G X-Fleet works.

The Drive 4G X-Fleet works by boosting the signal strength of cellular device, primarily those which work on a 4G LTE and 3G network. Compatibility of boosting extends to all the major carriers in United States. Such service providers include Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular, Straight Talk, Cricket, and more. Signals are boosted by an outside NMO antenna which accesses the voice and data signals of the selected phone. Because the Drive 4G X-Fleet boosts signals of several cell devices in a vehicle simultaneously, the entire team can utilize a strong signal, communicating more effectively than individual device cradle cellphone signal boosters.

Drive 4G-X Fleet boosters use an NMO antenna to reach out and grab wireless signals in 360 degrees fashion from all cellular service carrier cell towers in all directions. It then takes the signal, amplifies it, and relays amplified signal back to the phone. The booster serves as a relay point between the network tower and the cellphone user. It is required that you register your cell phone booster with your network provider. Since it includes NMO antenna, professional installation is required because it involves drilling into the vehicle roof or trunk to install.

Intent of Use.

When the CEO, Bruce Lancaster of Wilson Electronics introduced the weBoost Drive Fleet, he did so with the knowledge that Fleet vehicles are always on the move, but unfortunately, good cell signal is not always available, making it difficult for fleet operators to stay connected. Furthermore, the CEO acknowledged the dependence of fleets upon cellular technology. This conundrum is the basis for the design and development of the Drive 4G X-Fleet. This fleet-based booster allows for cellular-based fleet tracking. Because multiple trucks/vehicles are included in a fleet, it is important that multiple vehicles can communicate effectively, even in areas where signals are typically weak. Apart from the tracking, the overall functionality of the cellphones within the individual vehicles is increased. By increasing the signal strengths of the individual vehicles, companies and corporations can maintain an optimized workflow, especially where online cellular-based services are concerned (such as payments, tracking, order processing, and maintenance logging).

weBoost Fleet signal booster is ideal for companies who use telematics and tracking apps. In a world where applications on smartphones, as well as integrated software which utilizes app functionality, is a vital part of daily operations, it is critical that data and applications are optimized for speed and efficiency. The Drive Fleet signal amplifier kit delivers such results.

Can 2G Phones or CBs be used with the Drive 4G-X Fleet booster?

The cellphones which are intended for the booster are 4G LTE and 3G. The NMO antenna is a 4G antenna. Therefore, those who have obsolete 2G phones and cellular devices may have compatibility issues. Additionally, as the device is intended for the 3G and 4G phone, and as the majority of applications which are geared to the target function (that being boosting simultaneously cellular based use and app usage on such devices), those with 2G phones may not see any increase in signal strength.

CBs are not intended for use with the Drive 4G-X Fleet booster. You can use the CB as you always have, independent from the signal booster. There should not be interference between the two devices as CBs work on different frequencies than cellphones. It is recommended that you space the mount of the NMO antenna and the CB antenna as far away from each other as possible for ideal use. Vehicles which have Cellular based CBs will be able to use the booster to increase the effectiveness of their devices. As the product is designed to be compatible with all cellular based devices, anything within the vehicle with such intent should see an increase in signal strength.

More information on the NMO Antenna.

As stated prior, each Drive 4G-X Fleet comes with a 4G NMO Antenna. Because of its small size, it is able to be mounted on almost any fleet vehicle strategically. Additionally, as the device is made from durable materials, fleets do not have to worry about the typical external elements which influence other antenna/relay connections on their vehicle. Specifically, the 4G NMO antenna uses a high gain omni-directional output to increase the voice and data on cellular-based devices. The NMO Antenna connects to cellphones and to signal boosters and modems, working with all cellular bands for voice and 4G data: LTE/CDMA/GSM/UMTS/AWS.

Important safety information.

Although some of the power cables and supplies included in the kit may look like other similar products on the market, you should not substitute any parts not included in the kit with the Drive 4G-X Fleet booster. Use of a non-weBoost part could damage the booster.

The fleet booster is intended for use in vehicles which will not exceed a temperature of 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Vehicles which operate in high temperature climates should test the surface area of the car as well as the temperature of the vehicle when stationary for more than an hour (as the interior temperature of a vehicle can reach as high as 145 degrees Fahrenheit when parked for extended amounts of time. To minimize the risk of damage to your Drive 4G-X Fleet booster it is recommended that vehicles in high climate areas use reflectorized sun panels on the front and rear dashes to decrease the interior temperature of the vehicle.

Please note that the cellphone booster is designed to boost the cell phone signal without direct connection to the cellphone. Plugging the cellphone directly into the booster, through the use of a third party adapter, could damage the cell phone and/or the booster.

RF Safety as well as FCC and ISED safety regulations state that the antennas must be mounted 6” away from all active users.

E911 location information may not be provided or may be inaccurate for calls used by this device.

Mounting options and Setup.

Keep in mind that the installation of the NMO Antenna must be installed by a professional in order to comply with FCC regulations. However, you can do a soft install of the equipment provided in the kit. This will help not only the installer but will ensure that you have the placement and the positioning needed for your fleet’s needs. When performing a soft install, route the cable through an open door or window to ensure that the cable length to the interior antenna is sufficient and that ample length is given to relieve stress on the connectors (if the cable is too taunt unwanted tension could damage the connection ports and diminish the functionality of the booster).

When placing the outside antenna, you must have it mounted at least 12 inches away from other antennas. It is recommended that you mount the antenna as close to the center of the vehicle’s roof as possible. However, if there are sunroofs present, you will need to mount the antenna at least 6 inches from any of the edges of the sunroof. This 6-inch rule is true for all windows of the vehicle. For best performance, install the antenna at the top of the vehicle. Please note that the antenna will require a ¾ inch hole. Position the antenna so that the drill hole will not interfere with any mechanical parts (such as overhead lighting on the interior of the vehicle).

Once you have performed your soft install, ensure that the professional mounting the antenna uses the protective tape when drilling the hole. This will keep the vehicle from obtaining unwanted scratches and damages when drilling the ¾” hole. Once the hole is drilled the NMO mounting can be threaded through the interior (SMA connector end first) and the protective tape can be removed. Professionals should use silicone crease on the screw collar when mounting to the base mount, being careful NOT to apply any to the contact surface of the pins on the NMO antenna. When screwing in the antenna, the casket must touch the vehicle surface.

While the antenna is only 3 inches high, vehicles which have substantial cabin height (such as some fleet trucks) should consider the overall height of the vehicle once the antenna is mounted.

For the best results from your NMO 4G Antenna, always have the antenna mounted on a flat part of the vehicle. Curved surface mount could cause the threaded base and the antenna not to connect securely. Additionally, curved mounting could cause the Drive 4G-X Fleet’s cable wire to jiggle, thus minimizing the effectiveness of the product.

Interior considerations to the exterior antenna placement.

While the exterior of the vehicle is typically free of clutter, the interior spaces of vehicles, especially fleet vehicles, tend to have a bit more going on. Seating and storage are the prime considerations for the interior space. Because of this, careful consideration should be given to the Drive 4G-X Fleet’s run cable placement. The cable will need to go through the headliner of the vehicle and then run to the booster. It is recommended that when planning the placement of the outside cable, that you give consideration to this. Cables are best positioned running along the headliner (or placed under the headliner should you wish to conceal the wire), and down the side trim panel to the booster. By running the cable in this way, you eliminate the risk of tearing the wire from the antenna (if it was handing down loosely this would be a high risk).

Pick the side of the vehicle which is less used for the cable to run down. This will further minimize any risk of operator interference with the cable. Again, keep in mind the other mechanical features of the vehicle. Do not run the cable along the track of a sunroof (as this could cause the mechanical equipment to sever the cable), directly beside interior lighting wires (as this could cause a shorting), or between automatic seatbelt mounts (as this could cause the seatbelt not to fasten properly).

Know where your phone will be cradled/used.

Per the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL),  it has been reported that 47 states as well as D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands ban text messaging for all drivers. Additionally, 38 of the U.S. States ban the use of cellphones by novice (had their license or a different type of license for less than 6 months) or teen drivers with additional stipulations on cellphone usage for school bus drivers and other government employees. 16 states ban the use of any hand-held cell phone use. Currently, most states allow for hands-free use of a cell phone. There are no states which outright ban all cellphone usage.

Because of the legislature and for safety reasons, the cellphones should be mounted in a cradle (sold separately) and Bluetooth or other hands-free hardware should be purchased for the operation of the cellphone. The cradle cannot be held to the ear with the cellphone in operation (per FCC regulations). As such, when planning the mounting of the interior antenna, the user should keep the location of the mount/cellphone use location, in mind. The interior antenna cannot be more than 36 inches from the cellular device which is to be used. It does, however, need to be at least 18 inches away from the in-vehicle antenna.

Suggested mounting locations of the 4G in-vehicle antenna are on the dash or on the seat. Before mounting the antenna, ensure that you thoroughly clean the surface. If professional cleaning chemicals are used, make sure that the surface is completely dry before mounting the in-vehicle antenna.

Another reason why a professional should install your Drive 4G-X Fleet Booster.

Unlike the personal plug-in-use mobile cell phone signal boosters, the power of the Drive 4G-X Fleet booster requires a direct connection to the battery. This means that you do not have the standard “cigarette” or USB connection for the power. Instead, the supply brick must be housed to the battery. Because of the safety risks involved with connecting wires to the main power of the vehicle (especially when you start to consider the larger fleet vehicles which require substantially more power than a small family vehicle), a professional should perform the entire operation. Remember, because the booster has a NMO antenna, it is already required by the FCC that a professional install the device. This is just one more reason why you should comply.

The power must be routed through the firewall of the vehicle alongside the wires already threading from the battery. The brick supply must remain on the interior side of the firewall and ample room must be given from the firewall to the brick to allow for proper operation of the vehicle (for example the brick cannot interfere with the gas or break pedal). Connectivity to the vehicle battery can drain power, especially if the connection is not mounted properly. Professionals are advised to use a fuse tap or another solution to help minimize the drainage of the battery.

The signal booster, amplifier or repeater.

Where it may seem that a great deal of the device is saturated with various cables, it is not. Basically, you have one cable going from the NMO to the booster. You then have the interior antenna connecting to the booster. Finally, you have the power. That is it. The booster connects to these cables using simple Coax cable connectors (very similar to what you would find on your televisions digital box or modem at home, though not the same). The Booster, which looks like a square black box, is responsible for taking in weak signals in the area and building the strong signal which will be relayed back to your phone. It is not location dependent, meaning that the functionality of the device is driven by its hardware and software, not by the frequencies around it. The antennas are the devices which are location sensitive. The only real consideration for the booster is the ease of access for the NMO Outside antenna cable and the inside antenna cable to the box. Obviously, you do not want to mount the booster in an area which would be prone to people tripping over the wires or the booster. If possible, use a bracket to fasten the booster out of the way or off the floor of the vehicle. Other locations which are ideal are under non-automatic seating or mounted to the back of a middle console.

An important note: Once your professional has installed the antenna, ensure that all of the coax cables are connected to the booster before you plug in the power to the booster. Failure to ensure that both the NMO outside coax cable and the interior coax cable are connected to the booster before connecting the power plug, could result in damage to the Drive 4G-X Fleet booster.

Light Patterns for the Drive 4G-X Fleet booster.

There are four ways in which your booster will let you know how well or poorly it is operating. These messages are conveyed through either red or green lights. Lights should be read as follows:

  • Solid Green – Indicates that everything is working properly and that the correct amount of power is being delivered to the device. If you have a green light, the booster is working properly.
  • Blinking Red, then solid Green – A signal that one or more of the bands has reduced power due to oscillation. A safety feature in the device will shut off the band to prevent harmful interference. If the band continually turns off and resets, the device should be serviced/adjusted.
  • Solid Red – The built in safety features of the device have noticed a loop condition of Oscillation and the band has been shut off.
  • No lights – Should you see no lights, either green or red, this means that there is no power to the Drive 4G-X Fleet booster. Generally, this is caused when the connector to the power supply has become loose from the booster box. If the power connector is secured and you still do not have power, check the power cable. DO NOT disconnect and reconnect the cables which thread through the firewall to the main battery. If you believe that this is where the problem lay, have the device professionally serviced.

Troubleshooting your Drive 4G-X Fleet Booster.

Most of the issues that can arise from using the Drive 4G-X Fleet booster can be solved by unplugging the Booster’s power supply from the main booster (not the cables on the battery) and waiting at least a minute before plugging it back in, allowing for the device to reset. Yet, if you are having issues with a flashing red light or a solid red light, you can follow these steps to trouble shoot the booster.

  1. Turn off the vehicle
  2. Unplug the Booster Box’s power supply. Be sure to hold the booster and the cable so as not to damage the cord.
  3. Move the interior antenna further away from the mounted NMO outside antenna. Generally, the problem with not experiencing the desired signal boost is due to too much feedback between these two components.
  4. Plug the power back into the booster. Again, use minimal pressure. Do not force the cable into the connection spot.
  5. Once the power has been connected, wait for the indicator lights to show on your booster. The power own should appear first and blink temporarily. It should then change to a solid green. If you still experience a red light, or if you do not see any lights, this is an indicator that there may still be interference between the antennas or that power is not being supplied adequately to  the booster. Try readjusting the antenna distance.
